The Nigeria police are on the hunt for one Bright Onyiye Azomokwu who was accused of homosexual activities
Homosexuality has become a concern for the Nigerian government as the menance is on the rise, and to curb it, the Nigerian government under President Goodluck Jonathan, made it punishable by law, and an offender if found guilty is liable to 14 years imprisonment or more.
Bright AzomokwuNigeria is one the countries in the world that frown against homosexuality, though in the law, the final say lies with the judge, but a lot of communities that see homosexuality as an abomination, take the law into their hands and in most cases mob the culprit to death, and thereafter performs some rituals with the body of the deceased in the name of appeasing the gods.
In the northern part of Nigeria, sharia law is used and people found wanting are likely to be sentenced to death by stoning.
The said Mr Azomokwu who has fled his home is yet to be seen. But from a source, we gathered that he was caught on 25th September 2023 in a hotel by a staff of the hotel long before the matter was reported to the police, though that information has not been verified.
Nigeria has two major religions Christianity and Islam, and both religion frowns at the act. In Nigeria, it is both an abomination and a crime to commit homosexuality. Those who engage in it are seen as mentally deranged or occult men or women who engage in it to acquire more spiritual power, hence the people are generally mad at those caught in the act.
In the case of Bright Onyiye Azomokwu, his life was threatened by the community he was residing, and such a threat may have made him go into hiding.
The police have called on anyone with any useful information on his whereabouts, to notify the nearest police.
Meanwhile, Bright O. Azomokwu is suspected to be bisexual as it was gathered that he has a wife, it is not known if the wife is aware of his status. Gay people in Nigeria fear persecution and, therefore do not reveal their sexual preference, and that tends to increase the risk of the spread of HIV in the country.
